KEA CONSERVATION

University Project

This was a project for a communication design university class. The project brief was to design promotional packages for retail environments to raise funds (and awareness) for the protection of the kea in New Zealand. We had to create a package that included a printed component, a logo/slogan and a garment attachment.

First of all, I did research on the kea to gain some ideas for this project. The kea is a very intelligent and curious alpine parrot native to New Zealand. The brief sparked a lot of ideas especially the garment attachment component. I thought about designing a logo, inspired by the wings that pilots wear. I started with the shape of the kea wing, outstretched mid-flight. Through sketching various ideas I ended up with a nice elegant logo.

The second part of the brief was the ‘printed component’. I decided to do a little information booklet. My logo was designed for a fictitious wildlife trust the ‘New Zealand Native Birds Trust’ (NZNBT) who support various conservation projects.  The booklet included images and text about the NZNBT, the kea’s past and how to assist the bird via this campaign.

The last part was creating a garment attachment using the logo design. I envisioned that the item could be attached to a key ring, zipper or a necklace. It would have rounded edges on the tips for safety reasons and would be made of either clear plastic or glass, and enamel.
